What do you mean Centennial? Everyone else has been celebrating 125 so what happened to Hamiota? Well the truth is that 2006 would really have been 127 years since settlement began in what would become the Rural Municipality of Hamiota. For other communities their celebrations were acknowledging settlement that took place two years later than the first arrival of settlers to "Hamiota". The Council of the R.M. of Hamiota had a major celebration in 1984 to celebrate 100 years since the Municipality was officially formed, and the Village of Hamiota joined with the R.M. to make the celebration that much bigger. If you are still uncertain, here is a brief summary of Hamiota's proposed celebration for 2007!
In January, 1907 the first elected Council for the incorporated Village of Hamiota sat down to begin the important work of managing the affairs of Hamiota. Until this time the Village, which really had its beginnings in December, 1891, had operated within the Ward System of the Rural Municipality of Hamiota. It was a system that many residents within the unincorporated Village had come to see as unfair. During 1906 a petition was circulated and with "the not less than seventy-five signatures required" it was forwarded to the Provincial Legislature for consideration under the Municipal Act. The final paperwork towards Incorporation was completed in December, 1906, with the first meeting set down for January, 1907.
It is to the special celebration of the Incorporation of the Village of Hamiota in 1907 that the Centennial Committee welcomes you. July 18th to July 22nd will be the official opportunity to join the present residents of the Hamiota District in reviewing 100 years of growth within the Town of Hamiota. A range of activities will enable participants to enjoy the past and the present of this busy community! At the same time the celebration will allow each of you the opportunity to renew special acquaintances from the past and hopefully create opportunities to develop new friendships.
