Hamiota Conservation Authority CONSERVATION - Local
Formed in the spring of 1999, Hamiota Conservation Authority's primary purpose is to look at future development for conservation projects and activities within the Town and Rural Municipality of Hamiota. The Western Plains Garter Snake Hibernacula - Relocation Project was undertaken in the summer of 1999.
With one of the few known nesting sites for the Western Plains Garter Snake, the committee undertook, for preservation of the species, to relocate the snakes to a more favourable location.
Relocated four miles west of the town site, a hibernacula was constructed to encourage the snakes to remain in their new home.
Final analysis of the effectiveness of the project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2001.
